Raising children is a joy, and a challenge. Finding the right childcare for your family is of great importance when building the confidence to leave them for work or educational purposes.
Sadly, finding childcare is also often a challenge. Dependent on your childs age certain centres are unavailable. Depending on your needs, travel abilities and budget, it can feel impossible.
I've run into multiple challenges in acquiring and maintaining care for my three children over the last twelve years. This page will let you know what I've found. This information may have changed between now, as I write this, and the time you read this. Please add any updates or comments that can help the next person know best the solutions you've found. I will integrate any input into this page to maintain it.
It takes a village to raise a child. Together we create that village.
So here goes....
There are childcare subsidies available if you are of low income, to assist you with coverage, either partial or complete, for the cost of care for hours when you are in school or working. To qualify, you need to bring certain information to the Region of Waterloos Childcare Subsidy office during an initial interview. Their Website can offer contact information to assist in setting up that initial interview. The worker on your case may be able to direct you on where you may find eligible care. This form of childcare is available for both home settings and day care centres, dependent on your needs and preferences. Only home care settings approved by their program can be covered.
There are often waiting lists for day care centres and spots. Register early, as soon as you know that you will need coverage. You may be on a wait list for some time prior to receiving a vacant care spot.
Here are a few spots to start in looking for a childcare placement spot:
OneList
YMCA/YWCA
Your childs school (many have lists of local sitters- never knew this but when I checked it was true!)
Kajiji / Facebook - Screen thoroughly- Police checks are not too expensive- ask for one as well as references
